Kangana Ranaut alleges Masaba Gupta barred her from wearing saree for Ram Janmbhoomi visit

Actor and politician Kangana Ranaut has accused designer Masaba Gupta of discouraging her from wearing the brand’s sari during her visit to Ram Janmbhoomi in Ayodhya, calling the incident deeply hurtful. Sharing her account on social media, Kangana said the episode left her “quietly” in tears and reflected what she described as prejudice.

Kangana shared the incident while participating in the viral “2016 is the new 2026” trend on Instagram, posting throwback moments from a decade ago. In one of the posts, she revisited her past friendship with Masaba Gupta, daughter of actor Neena Gupta, and recalled an experience that she said changed her perception of people in the industry.

She wrote, “One instance I will never forget is when I was wearing a Masaba Gupta sari for Ram Janmbhoomi, and she told the stylist that I can't go in her sari. I had already left from Lucknow for Ayodhya, and it was not possible to change. I felt so humiliated and degraded that I quietly cried in my car. Later, like other designers, she told the stylist not to mention her or her brand's name.”

Sharing a throwback selfie with Masaba, Kangana added, “Leftists are blinded by their hate and prejudice, and the young generation must be very cautious of them.” She further alleged that several designers who once sought her support later distanced themselves from her. “Forget films, the big designers who begged me to launch their jewellery and clothes in ‘free fund ka campaigns’ later refused to send my stylist clothes,” she claimed.

As the statements circulated on X, users questioned the designer’s silence. Kangana elaborated further, asking why images from that time were never shared by the brand. “Designers get very excited whenever their brands get seen on celebrities… can you explain why won't she use these images or why won't the stylist tag her?” she wrote.

Explaining the context, Kangana said she was preparing for promotions of her 2023 film Tejas and planned a visit to Ram Janmbhoomi. “Masaba sent the clothes to the stylist for my promotions but when she was told it's for Ram Janmbhoomi she told the stylist not to use her clothes,” Kangana alleged.

She also praised her stylist as “very kind and genuine,” adding that the stylist covered the cost of the sari herself. “The hate, the bitterness, the prejudice… still makes me sick to my stomach,” Kangana concluded. Masaba Gupta has not responded to the claims so far.
