Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh has repeatedly, invoked conflicting blows from Bollywood artists. While some try to question the details of his character, many have raised arguments about his toxic masculinity and the way Kabir treats his girlfriend Preethi. Now, Kabir Khan had strong arguments about the character at the 21st Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star, which was also attended by Tahira Kashyap.
The Tubelight director was asked about his opinions on the subject of toxic masculinity in films such as Kabir Singh. Talking at an interactive session on the topic ‘Cinema As Agent of Change’, Khan said, “If a character has toxic masculinity, that is not the problem. It is ultimately about I (the filmmaker) show him in the film. That matters. Am I glorifying him or showing him as a broken piece? It also depends on how the audience perceives it. What matters the most is, what comment the filmmaker is making at the end of the film.”
When quizzed about his take on the censorship because he has faced hurdles in the past, Kabir said: “There should not be any censorship and the film certification board, if they feel that a certain kind of content is not suitable for a certain age group, they can bring more ratings instead of just ‘U’, ‘A’, ‘U/A’. But they should not be censoring films. Censorship sometimes creates the most idiotic situations.”
This year, Kabir Singh seems to be one of the most controversial films in Bollywood. Shahid Kapoor is speeding on the highway to success for his latest film and the actor is proud of it. The film has grossed Rs 200 crore in the domestic market and thanking his fans for showering love on him and the film, Shahid also expressed his gratitude for loving ‘Kabir Singh- the most flawed character he has played so far’ through his social media handle.
