The city of Mumbai is witnessing a deeply emotional moment as the last rites of legendary singer Asha Bhosle commenced on Monday with full state honours. Her mortal remains were brought to her residence in Lower Parel early in the day, where family, friends, and admirers gathered in large numbers to pay their final respects.

A sense of silence and grief surrounded the area as fans stood outside, many holding flowers, waiting patiently for one last glimpse of the iconic singer. Draped in the Indian tricolour, her body reflected the immense contribution she made to the nation’s cultural and musical identity. The cremation is scheduled to take place at the Late Bhagoji Baluji Keer Hindu Shamshan Bhoomi in Shivaji Park at 4 pm, where a large turnout of dignitaries and well-wishers is expected.

Asha Bhosle passed away on April 12 at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital after suffering from multiple-organ failure. Her demise has left the country mourning the loss of a voice that shaped Indian cinema’s musical journey for decades.

Industry, Political Leaders and Fans Pay Tribute

From early morning, several prominent personalities began arriving at her residence to offer condolences and stand by her grieving family. Among the first to arrive were Asha Parekh, Riteish Deshmukh and Tabu, who were seen consoling her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, and other family members.

One of the most heart-wrenching moments came when cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar arrived with his wife, Anjali Tendulkar. Known to share a warm personal bond with Asha Bhosle, Tendulkar appeared visibly emotional and broke down after paying his respects. He later spoke with Zanai and offered comfort to the family.

The music fraternity also turned up in strength. A. R. Rahman, who has often spoken about Asha Bhosle’s influence, visited to pay tribute. Singers Javed Ali and Sudesh Bhosale, along with actor Neil Nitin Mukesh and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, were also present, each carrying memories of her unparalleled artistry.

Political leaders joined in mourning the loss as well. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the residence and paid floral tribute, describing Asha Bhosle as an “immortal pole star” of Indian music. She was accompanied by BJP leader Ashish Shelar. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Rashmi Thackeray were also seen arriving to offer their respects.

Meanwhile, thousands of fans gathered outside, some teary-eyed, others quietly humming her songs, each person carrying a piece of her legacy in their own way.

Asha Bhosle’s contribution to Indian music remains unmatched. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, she recorded thousands of songs across multiple languages, constantly reinventing herself with changing times. From soulful ghazals to energetic dance numbers, she brought a unique texture and emotion to every song she sang.

Her timeless tracks such as Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Chura Liya Hai Tumne and Mera Kuchh Saaman continue to resonate with listeners across generations. She had the rare ability to adapt her voice to suit every mood, every era, and every composer she collaborated with.

Despite being the younger sister of the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle carved a distinct identity for herself. She experimented fearlessly, embraced unconventional styles, and built a legacy that stood entirely on its own merit.

In a poignant final chapter of her career, she recorded The Shadowy Light with the British band Gorillaz. The song, layered with introspection, now feels like a quiet farewell from the singer herself. In her last social media post, she reflected on life after a visit to Varanasi, speaking about understanding her purpose, words that now feel hauntingly meaningful.

She is survived by her son Anand Bhosle and granddaughter Zanai, who has been at the centre of the family’s grief during this time.
