India Army finally opened its doors for women to join as soldiers. On Thursday, the Indian Army started its online registration process and put out advertisement for recruitment of women in the Corps of Military Police. This is the first time women will be inducted as soldiers in the force. This decision came three months after the government announced that women would be inducted into the force in the Personnel Below Officer Rank (PBOR) category.
Today, when we talk about strengths and achievements, women are not left behind. In fact, they have an equal share in it. Crushing the patriarchal norms and beliefs, women are now perceived as an equally important gender. Recruiting women in Indian Army is indeed an historic decision and seen as a major breakthrough for women in the country. And long before the Government of India’s decision came, our TV actresses’ have already broken the barrier and portrayed the role of a soldier onscreen.

Nimrat Kaur in The Test Case
The Test Case was one of the best shows that ALT Balaji came up with. It featured actress acclaimed Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur in lead role. The series centred around a woman (Nimrat Kaur) training to be the first woman test case in a combat role, in the Indian Army. It follows her journey which is filled with challenges and gender biases in spite being an intelligent and focused woman.
Sai Deodhar in Saara Akaash
Many of you might have forgotten this show but Saara Akaash had an intriguing storyline with a stellar cast. The show featured actors Sai Deodhar, Shakti Anand, Manav Gohil, Anuj Saxena, Parmeet Sethi and Manish Goel in key roles. It depicted the story of Indian Airforce Officers and their missions to protect the country. Sai essayed the character of Flight Lieutenant Monica Singh who was strong and determined.
Priyanka Bassi and Sanaya Irani in Left Right Left
Left Right Left was a popular show and audience literally used to wait for it’s episodes to come on-air. The show had a huge fan base and it also proved to be a breakthrough show for many from the cast. The show depicted the personal and professional lives of cadets who came to Kanchanjunga Military Academy where soldiers are trained to serve the nation.
Actress Priyanka Bassi played a strong and independent woman who came to the institute for a mission of her own. Sanaya Irani too donned an army uniform for the show where she played cadet Sameera Shroff.
Jhanvi Chheda in Chhoona Hai Aasman
Actress Jhanvi Chheda donned the character of an Indian Airforce officer in the Star One show, Chhoona Hai Aasman. The show had a similar concept as that of Saara Aakash to some extent. Apparently, both were produced under the same banner.
Mouli Ganguly in Saaksshi
Saaksshi was a crime television series which was based on the story of an undercover cop in an anti-terrorist squad. Actress Mauli Ganguly portrayed the lead character of Saaksshi Singh in the Sony TV show.
