I would love to make a Hindi film: Brazilian filmmaker

Kolkata, Nov 14 (IANS) Brazilian filmmaker Wolney Mattos Oliveira, who is a fan of Bollywood films, Friday said he would like to make a Hindi film provided he can learn the language.

'I would love to make a Hindi film in the future. But first I will have to learn the language,' Oliveira told reporters Friday afternoon before the screening of his film at the 14th Kolkata Film Festival here.

The filmmaker said the storyline of his debut feature film 'The Isle of Death' is relevant in the Indian context as well.

'The theme of 'The Isle Of Death' is about the journey of an ambitious youth from the city to his roots in his village. I am sure this theme is very relevant in India too, especially when most youths in India are more concerned about their career and money, and forget about their roots,' he said.

The producer-director said the film could have been shot in India instead of Cuba.

'It's just because I am more familiar with Cuba than I am with India that the film was put into the Cuban context,' Oliveira said.

Asked if Bollywood films like 'Swades' and 'The Namesake' have inspired him for his debut film, Oliveira said: 'I watch a lot of Bollywood films these days, but I don't remember names. I have seen a lot of Bollywood films that helped me grow as a director and inspired my creativity.'

'The Isle Of Death' is a film set in Cuba, in which 20-year-old Rodolfo aspires to become a successful filmmaker. But in course of time, he faces discouragement and frustration. He returns to the village where he spent his childhood and finds solace as well as his first love. It is in the village that he, by unexpected means, succeeds in making his first film.
