I am getting an opportunity to experience such a wide range of emotions: ‘Mithai’ actress Debattama Saha

Zee TV's latest fiction offering - Mithai - is an amalgamation of a love story and a family drama, all tied together inside a wonderful box of traditional Indian sweets. Following the story of two polar opposite personalities - Mithai (Debattama Saha) and Siddharth (Aashish Bhardhwaj), the show delves into the life of a gifted sweet maker based In Mathura who wants to preserve the legacy of Aloo Jalebis that she has inherited from her father but is now, unfortunately, on the verge of extinction. While the show has started off well and is being appreciated by the audience, a lot of exciting twists and turns are all set to keep the viewers at the edge of their seats.  

In the upcoming episodes, Mithai will be seen carving her own destiny by fulfilling Pitai's (her father's) dream of opening a sweet shop in Jatipura. However, when Mithai is asked to marry Shubham (Nikhlesh Rathore), she refuses because she believes that she will be tied down by the responsibilities of marriage and won't be able to fulfil her dream. Similar to Mithai, Debattama has a strong opinion about marriage as well, and she feels that people make some weird assumptions about what women can and cannot do after marriage. She believes that women like Mithai should have the freedom to pursue their dreams and shouldn't be limited to specific roles because of marriage. 

As Debattama Saha reveals, “I am really having a great time playing the character of Mithai as I am getting an opportunity to experience such a wide range of emotions. For a recent scene on the show, I experienced what it felt for a woman when she realizes that she won’t be able to fulfil her dream just because of the responsibilities that will come on her shoulders after marriage. I put myself in her shoes and went through what it feels like losing out on everything you dreamt about, and it was heartbreaking. Personally, I believe that all the responsibilities of marriage can be handled by a woman, while she is still attempting to achieve her goals. A girl should never give up on her dreams just because of marriage.” 

She further adds, “I’m a woman who believes that everyone should be free to make their own decisions. As long as it is a decision made by the person without any interference, and if it is genuinely her wish to do something, then she can do anything in her life. I am blessed to have supportive parents, who have always let me do what I feel is right and that is really empowering. I hope that all the viewers will be able to relate to Mithai’s journey, understand her values, her decisions and hopefully, get motivated to achieve their dreams.” 

While Debattama’s words of wisdom will surely inspire women across the world, it will be interesting to see what happens after Mithai turns down the opportunity to marry Shubham.
