'Game of Thrones' Shut Out With All Female Directors in 'Golden Globes' Nominations

And finally, the moment has arrived as the Golden Globe nominations were announced. The celebration of the Hollywood Press Awards is almost second to the Oscars in terms of popularity and relevance to many. However, this year's nominations have already sparked yet another debate as all the female directors of this past year were completely shut off.

The biggest highlights included - Emmy favorite Game of Thrones almost entirely snubbed and landed just one nomination and Joker landing with four massive nominations. Brad Pitt landed a nomination for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood while Netflix's The Irishman was also showered with several nominations. HBO may have a good run too as one of its surprise hits, Succession landed three nominations but De Niro did not get a nod for his role in The Irishman.

Bombshell and Little Women also failed to earn the best motion picture, director and screenplay nominations. And while Charlize Theron and Margot Robbie were nominated for Bombshell, fellow star Nicole Kidman was not, but she was recognized on the TV side with a nomination for Big Little Lies. In terms of other stars who could have earned multiple nominations, Laura Dern scored a nod for her role in Marriage Story but failed to land a nomination for her work in Little Women or Big Little Lies.

While Greta Gerwig may have been one of the most high-profile women left out of the best director category, the all-male field also snubbed fellow awards-hopeful female directors Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Marielle Heller (Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) and Olivia Wilde (Booksmart). Other notable names left off the best director list include Noah Baumbach (despite Marriage Story's leading six nominations) and Clint Eastwood (Richard Jewell).

On the TV side, there were a lot more surprises as mega shows like  Euphoria, The Good Place, The Handmaid's Tale, Orange is the New Black, PEN15, Silicon Valley, This Is Us, Veep, Watchmen, When They See Us and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt were all entirely shut out also meaning broadcast television did get any acceptance.
