Bollywood actor and BJP’s newly elected MP Sunny Deol’s epic period drama Gadar: Ek Prem Katha had created frenzy amongst the masses. The 2001 action-drama, which also starred Ameesha Patel and Amrish Puri in pivotal roles, was set in 1947 the time of India-Pakistan partition. It was such a massive hit, that it one of the very few movies that had entered the 100 crore club.

During a recent interview, the 62-year-old actor was quizzed about the much talked sequel of Gadar and casting his son Karan Deol as the lead. While expressing his thoughts on creating a franchise of the much-loved film, just like Yamla Pagla Deewana, Sunny surprisingly compared it to Hollywood’s hit franchise, a saga that follows the journey of love, friendship and bravery, Star Wars.

Star Wars

As quoted by a leading daily, Sunny said, “That would be a beautiful idea if we could find a subject. There's a lot of love for the Deols. YPD (Yamla Pagla Deewana) was an interest concept but after the first film we couldn't get it right. Gadar for me is like Star Wars, the whole country has seen it. People see it as an Indo-Pak drama. I see it as a beautiful love story. With a great subject, it could be big."

The Darr actor currently has his hands full, what with directing his son Karan’s debut movie Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas and also fulfilling his duties as the MP and working towards the civic amenities and infrastructure of the Gurdaspur district.

Sunny also revealed that directing his own son and watching him perform action scenes, makes him realise how his father Dharmendra must have felt during the release of Betaab, his debut movie.

He said, “I was the first in our generation to be launched and this film made me realise what my dad (Dharmendra) must have gone through during Betaab. Unless you become a father yourself, you can’t empathise with this pain, fear and love.”

He revealed that despite pushing Karan to film the scene, he had his heart in his mouth while watching him plummet 400 feet and forgot to record the stunt. He further admitted that he got even more nervous watching those scenes, wondering if he could have done better.

Elaborating further Sunny added, “I remind myself that I did, so he will too. Still, given that he comes from a protective family, it’s good I’ve directed his first film. It’s important for a newcomer to be fathered and while filmmakers in our time were more approachable, the scenario has changed today.”
