Deepika Padukone stepped in to play Romi Devi in Kabir Khan’s ‘83, which features Ranveer Singh as legendary cricketer Kapil Dev. Touted to be one of the highest anticipated films, this sports drama is extra special for fans as the leading duo will be seen together on screen for the first time after the marriage, interestingly as reel life husband-wife.
Besides, Ranveer, the film stars Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Harrdy Sandhu, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Ammy Virk, Sahil Khattar among others in key roles. In a sweet gesture, Deepika penned personalized letters to the entire cast and crew inviting them to the party. Her letter reads, “Member of team ’83, Over the last several months iconic moments have been relieved and memories have been etched in our hearts forever. I am beyond proud to be a part of a team that is driven by love, passion, enthusiasm and eternally grateful for your contribution. And for this, I would like to invite you to a celebration!” quotes DNA.
Besides, in an earlier interview, Deepika had opened up about her decision of taking up the character as Romi Dev. After playing intense characters in her past films like Padmaavat, Bajirao Mastaani to name a few, the actress wanted to take up a lighter role.
“Honestly speaking, I’ve always enjoyed playing characters that take a lot out of me, emotionally. Even in ’83, there are extreme highs and lows that Romi also goes through in the journey towards the Indian cricket team creating history by winning the world cup. But the film also explores lighter moments between Romi and Kapil Dev. So, in that sense, you can say that it has been a lighter part emotionally,” Deepika had talked about her character in ‘83.
Directed by Kabir Khan, '83 is a biopic based on the life of veteran cricketer Kapil Dev, which talks about the time India won the coveted World Cup in 1983. The film is slated to release on 10 April 2020.
