Chhichhore is the best student of the year so far: Movie Review (3.5/5)

Get a hold of yourself before you end up falling from your seats! Chhichhore brings an end to Bollywood's drought of comedy...

Chhichhore

The Nitesh Tiwari directorial Chhichhore is the story of young losers who reunite due to a tragedy faced by Anirudh (Sushant Singh Rajput) and Maya’s (Shraddha Kapoor) son.

In retrospect, Bollywood has seen a plethora of comedy films. Considering 'comedy' a totally subjective matter, it is difficult to appeal to the masses as there is a lot to undermining that goes into understanding the difference between a funny and a truly great comedy film.

The most important element of any film is the script and if the makers could pull-off a script that could crackle up the audience it definitely makes a successful attempt. In the past decade, there have been only a few comic flicks that are truly great. And the addition of Chhichhore is an achievement.

It's true that the makers have used every possible resource to bring out the colours successfully. The technique of writing situations for the sequences, dialogues, and performance to enhance the output can be seen and it includes all the necessary elements.

The film initiates itself with a high point as the establishing shot will tickle your funny bones. Nitesh has joined the dots carefully as the translation of script to screen looks flawless. But, there's always room for improvement and there are a few corners which could have been filled but those aren't the ubiquitous errors. In fact, these corners of errors are filled by the performances and dialogue delivery of every character. The amazing part of the hum-drum humour and great character is that you can predict the dialogues and a character's action.

To sum up Nitesh's efforts for the film, there's only one thing you need to know - there's magic in the script. In addition to it, his choice of background score is a cherry on top. The makers have upped their game in cinematography as well. Especially, the sequences on the chessboard - Make sure you observe that.

Sushant and Shraddha

There's hardly any errors to observe as the whole setting of the film touches the factual reality which can be observed with a prism of possibilities. For eg. If Sushant's character was the typical 'bade baap ka beta' there would be no sense to advance the film and the nonsensical drama would be too pretentious. But that's not the case with Chhichhore. Sushant Singh Rajput, Varun Sharma, Naveen Polishetty, Prateik Babbar, Tushar Pandey, Tahir Bhasin, Saharsh Kumar Shukla gave off the charts performances and proved their worth as the perfect choice for the film.

Now, it all boils down to Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor

First - When you could manage to mobilize a fine male casting why would you want to rope shraddha as Maya? The reason being - she never looked a part of an ensemble which these boys have managed to pull-off.

Second - Why was there no thought put into young Maya's costume? Her dressing nowhere matches to that of the boys. An element wasted!

Third - When you knew shraddha had to play the part of an elder woman as well why weren't her looks altered accordingly? When the boys looked men in their mid-50s why was she looking like a 20-year-old youngling who never saw any signs of ageing?

Technically, the film deserves 4 stars but due to Shraddha’s casting Maya and poor performance, the film definitely lost a few points there!

Some might argue this film also has everything except studies! But let's not forget, if the makers were to add academics, the whole setting of the film would have been distorted and there would be no sense in the script.

In conclusion, Chhichhore is a truly great comedy film. It is everything that Student of the Year and Student of the Year 2 lacked and symbolizes the aesthetic value in every frame.
