New Delhi, March 27 (IANS) The once low-cost single screen Sangam Cinema here has been revamped into a multiplex with two screens, improved projection and sound facilities, and comfortable seating for 392. It was inaugurated by Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The theatre, situated in South Delhi's R.K. Puram area, has been acquired by multiplex chain PVR and opened its doors to the public on Friday.

Sushant, who is here to promote his forthcoming film "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!", cut a red ribbon for the inauguration along with PVR's chairman and managing director Ajay Bijli on Thursday.

With this addition, PVR's screen count has now become 140 in Delhi-NCR.

Sushant feels it's the right time for Sangam Cinema to reopen.

"There has been a glut of movies since the World Cup and exams are going on. But we have some fabulous films now coming from next week onwards," Sushant, whose "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" releases on April 3, said at the event.

The two-screen theatre, which is spread across an area of 13,000 sq ft, provides a seating of 392 (300 + 92). Equipped with 2K digital projections, 7.1 channel sound and 3D enabled with large screens, comfortable seating and a wide range of food and beverages -- the theatre is expected to draw crowds as fervently as it did in the 1970s.

The timing of shows and ticket prices will be similar to that of PVR's other properties.

Sangam Cinema was one of the last few single screen theatres in Delhi. Asked whether the new multiplex will retain any of its earlier charm?

Bijli said: "The decision to change this into a mini-mall or a film-food destination was of the owners. They had decided to convert this into a smaller cinema space and then the rest of it to be a food space.

"I was just given the space as a tenant and then we decided to make it as a modern-day multiplex with good quality screens and good sound. There is nothing much from the previous Sangam that we could bring in because the whole thing was built from scratch. So we looked at what viewers like today, rather than going into the past."

Some of the films that will be featured on the first day include "Dragon Blade", "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" and "NH10", followed by "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" and "Furious 7" next week.
