Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis entered theatres with muted expectations but ended its first day by changing the conversation around its commercial prospects. Despite arriving amid heavy competition and after a late change in release plans, the film managed to stay afloat and even surprise the trade.
The opening day numbers signalled that Ikkis was not merely surviving on curiosity. It found support through audience response across the day, turning an uncertain launch into a stable starting point that few had forecast.
Ikkis Turns Skepticism Into A Solid Start
Released across 4,000 screens nationwide on January 1, Ikkis faced pressure from multiple sides even before its first show. The film had shifted its release from December 25 at short notice, leaving little room for a traditional buildup. At the same time, Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar was still drawing crowds in large numbers, making screen allocation and show timings a challenge.
Against this backdrop, Ikkis collected Rs 7 crore net in India on its opening day. This figure stood well above the Rs 2 to 2.5 crore range that had been circulating within trade circles just a day earlier. Morning shows began on a slow note with around 12 percent occupancy, but the trend changed steadily. Afternoon numbers climbed to 35 percent, while evening shows reached close to 47 percent, indicating growing interest as the day progressed.
Such growth through the day suggests that audience feedback played a key role in shaping turnout. For a film of this scale and subject, this pattern becomes crucial. Sustained upward movement over the extended opening weekend will determine whether the film can convert this momentum into a longer run.
A Story Rooted In History And Final Performances
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfnyH8odcusIkkis draws from the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, the youngest soldier to receive the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour. Set during the 1971 India Pakistan War, the film traces his courage and decisions on the battlefield, focusing on the events that defined his legacy.
Agastya Nanda steps into the role of Khetarpal, carrying the narrative across key moments of the conflict. The film also features Dharmendra as his father in what turned out to be his final screen appearance. The veteran actor passed away a little over a month before the film reached theatres, adding a layer of emotional weight to the release. Ikkis also marks one of the last films of Asrani, who died late last year. Jaideep Ahlawat and Deepak Dobriyal appear in supporting roles, rounding out the cast.
The presence of these performances, combined with Raghavan’s approach to storytelling, has helped the film connect with viewers who value content driven cinema. Whether this connection sustains beyond the initial days remains the key question.
Dhurandhar Marches On As More Records Fall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKOVzHcjEIo&t=2sWhile Ikkis worked to find its footing, Dhurandhar continued its remarkable box office journey. Benefiting from the January 1 holiday, the film collected Rs 15 crore on the same day, reinforcing its dominance. With this, Dhurandhar completed 28 consecutive days of double digit collections, a feat that has not been achieved before in Hindi cinema.
The coming Friday is expected to test its hold, but steady evening growth could allow the film to cross 30 straight days in double digits. If that happens, Dhurandhar would complete a full month of sustained high earnings, placing it firmly on course to challenge Pushpa 2 The Rule for the title of the highest grossing Hindi film ever.
For Ikkis, the road ahead is more measured. An extended total between Rs 30 and 40 crores would place it in respectable territory given its scale and competition. A sharper rise, however, could shift its standing from steady performer to genuine success story.

Ikkis entered New Year week with low expectations but flipped the script on day one. Strong word of mouth pushed collections well past trade predictions despite Dhurandhar’s massive run. With occupancies rising through the day, the war drama has found early support. The extended weekend will now decide whether Ikkis can truly break out at the national box office this January.
