When Border 2 hit theatres this Republic Day weekend, audiences expected patriotism, powerful war moments and Sunny Deol in his familiar, thunderous form. What many did not expect was an emotional moment right at the beginning of the film that quietly moved fans across the country. As the opening credits rolled, Sunny Deol’s name appeared with a deeply personal addition -“Sunny Deol (Dharmendra ji ka beta)”; a simple line that carried decades of love, respect and legacy.

Social media was quick to react, with fans calling it a son’s quiet salute to the man who shaped him as both an actor and a human being.

Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. His demise left a deep void in Hindi cinema and an even deeper one in Sunny’s life. The tribute in Border 2 felt like Sunny’s way of saying that no matter how many decades pass, his identity will always be rooted in being Dharamji’s son.

Sunny Deol, Border 2, And Carrying The Legacy Forward

Sunny Deol has often spoken about how his father’s work inspired him, but during the recent launch of Ghar Kab Aaoge in Jaisalmer, his words carried extra weight. He recalled watching Dharmendra’s 1964 war classic Haqeeqat as a child and how deeply it stayed with him. That early memory later shaped his decision to make Border with JP Dutta, a film that went on to become a landmark in Indian war cinema.

Set during the 1971 Indo-Pak War, Border 2 focuses on the Battle of Basantar, a crucial and fiercely fought chapter in Indian military history. Sunny Deol returns in a role that demands both emotional depth and commanding screen presence. Alongside Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty, he anchors the film with gravitas and restraint.
