Bollywood’s first major theatrical release of 2026 has arrived with thunderous intent, and early box office trends suggest that Border 2 is already shaping up to be a dominant force. Riding high on Republic Day fervour, the film has entered cinemas with massive anticipation and a scale that immediately sets it apart.

The sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 classic has leveraged nostalgia, patriotism and star power to create a pre release frenzy rarely seen in recent times. With strong advance bookings and positive early buzz, Border 2 has positioned itself as a true event film right out of the gate.

Advance Booking Numbers Signal A Blockbuster Opening

Even before its first public show, Border 2 made its presence felt through extraordinary advance sales. The film released across nearly 4800 screens with close to 17000 shows running nationwide, reflecting immense confidence from exhibitors. Trade tracking figures indicate that more than four lakh tickets were sold in advance for Day 1 alone. These bookings translated into a gross collection of approximately Rs 12.5 crore, driven by a massive surge in the final 24 hours before release. The spike reportedly touched nearly 100 percent, showcasing strong last minute audience pull.

What makes these numbers even more striking is that Border 2 comfortably surpassed the pre opening figures of Dhurandhar, one of the biggest hits of 2025, even before a single show had begun.

Republic Day Weekend Boosts Early Projections

Industry estimates suggest that the timing of the release could not have been more favourable. With Republic Day falling within the opening window, the film has benefited from a national holiday and heightened patriotic sentiment. Trade experts believe the film is on track for an opening day net collection in the range of Rs 35 crore to Rs 40 crore. Morning occupancy reports from North India and key urban centres have been particularly encouraging, prompting several exhibitors to add extra shows in response to demand.

Looking ahead, the extended four day weekend could push Border 2 beyond Rs 125 crore in total collections. If achieved, this would place the film among the biggest Republic Day weekend performers in recent years.

A Star Packed Ensemble Fuels Scale And Appeal

Leading the cast is Sunny Deol, returning to the Border universe in a commanding role. He is joined by Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty, creating a multi generational ensemble designed to widen audience reach. The supporting cast includes Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana and Anya Singh, adding emotional depth and balance to the war driven narrative.

The film expands its canvas significantly, offering storylines that appeal to both mass belts and multiplex audiences, while maintaining the patriotic tone that defined the original.

A Sweeping 1971 War Narrative Across Three Forces

Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India Pakistan War, Border 2 transforms the original’s single battlefield focus into a large scale multi front war saga. Sunny Deol plays Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler, leading Indian forces on ground operations. Varun Dhawan portrays Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, a Param Vir Chakra awardee whose bravery anchors the Army narrative. Diljit Dosanjh appears as Flight Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, representing the Air Force in intense aerial combat sequences. Ahan Shetty plays Lt Commander MS Rawat, bringing the Navy into the conflict.

Their intersecting journeys highlight sacrifice, brotherhood and duty, forming the emotional backbone of the film.

Early morning occupancy has been reported as strong, especially in North Indian circuits and major cities. While a few early shows faced logistical delays in Mumbai, overall momentum remains firmly positive. With Dhurandhar nearing the end of its theatrical run and no immediate major releases competing for screens, Border 2 currently enjoys a clear advantage.

However, sustainability will be key. Unlike Dhurandhar, which faced minimal competition until its third week, Border 2 will encounter new challengers. Mardaani 3 arrives next week, followed by a significant clash in the third week involving O Romeo and Tu Yaa Main. If Border 2 maintains its current trajectory, it could overpower incoming releases and dominate the early box office narrative of 2026.
