Bollywood Biopics you Cannot Miss in 2020!

With a wide range of Biopics-ranging from sports to historical period dramas, 2020 is indeed a year of Biopics for Bollywood. Check out the entire list below...

The year 2019 is coming to an end but there’s nothing to worry as the coming year, 2020, is going to be bigger, better and filled with a barrage of movies. The coming year is sure to be exciting and hell lot entertaining as movies ranging from action, comedy to superhero movies, 2020 has it all! However, the one thing to be noted amongst the variety of movies paving their way into 2020 is the number of biopics Bollywood is going to see in the coming year. 

We bring to you a list of Bollywood Biopics you cannot miss in 2020:

1) Tanhaji

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is a biographical period action film starring Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kajol, Jagapathi Babu and Sharad Kelkar in the lead roles. Directed by Om Raut, the film is based on the life of Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare and marks the 100th film of Ajay Devgn. The trailer and songs look vibrant and promise an extravagant treat for the audience. The historical period drama is scheduled to be theatrically released in 3D on 10 January 2020.

2)Chhapaak

Based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak stars  Deepika Padukone alongside Vikrant Massey. The film’s trailer released a few weeks back and received an overwhelming response from the audience. The prosthetics used in the film by Deepika to mold into Laxmi’s character give an authentic look and the film looks high on emotions. Depicting the life and struggle of an acid attack survivor, Chhapaak is an initiative for change and is slated to release on 10 January 2020.

3)Gunjan Saxena

Directed by newcomer Sharan Sharma and produced by Karan Johar under his banner of Dharma Productions, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is based on the life of Gunjan Saxena, one of the first women combat aviators who entered the war zone of Kargil in 1999 along with her fellow lieutenant Srividya Rajan. Starring Janhvi Kapoor in the titular role, the biographical film also stars  Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in pivotal roles. The first look of the film showcasing Janhvi in the shoes of Gunjan Saxena look impressive and makes the film a highly anticipated one from the 2020 lot. The film is scheduled to release on 13 March 2020.

4)Shakuntala Devi

Starring Vidya Balan in the lead role, Shakuntala Devi biopic is based on the life of Shakuntala Devi, a well-known mathematical genius, who was also known as the "human computer".  Directed and written by Anu Menon and produced by Sony Pictures Networks India and Vikram Malhotra under his banner Abundantia Entertainment, the film also features Jisshu Sengupta, Sanya Malhotra, and Amit Sadh in supporting roles. The first look of Vidya sporting short hair as mathematical genius Shakuntala Devi looks very legitimate and the rest will be accessed on 8 May 2020, when the film hits the theatres.

5) ‘83

One of the highly anticipated sports biopic film of 2020, titled ‘83 is based on the life of veteran cricketer Kapil Dev, his journey and the memoir of the 1983 Cricket World Cup. While Ranveer Singh plays the role of the cricket legend, Deepika Padukone plays his wife Romi Dev in the film. Directed by Kabir Khan, the sports drama features an ensemble cast of  Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Amrita Puri, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, and Sahil Khattar. The first looks and posters have highly impressed the audience as Ranveer looks a xerox copy of Kapil Dev, sporting his iconic cricket shots. ‘83 hits the theatres on 10 April 2020.

6)Thalaivi

 Director A. L. Vijay brings the story of J. Jayalalithaa, late politician and film actress who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to life, with Kangana Ranaut playing the role of Jayalalithaa. Produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shailesh R. Singh under their respective banners Vibri Media and Karma Media And Entertainment, the film is slated to be a trilingual biographical film and will be made simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. The first look of Kangana as Jayalalithaa received mixed responses as many felt that the look looked fabricated. However, the rest of the story unfolds on 26 June 2020.

7)Sardar Udham Singh

Helmed by Shoojit Sircar, the film is all set to bring legendary freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh alive on celluloid with Vicky Kaushal in the titular role. The 2020 film unfolds the life of Udham Singh, a revolutionary freedom fighter best known for his assassination in London of Michael O'Dwyer in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for then which he was subsequently tried and convicted of murder and was hanged on July 31, 1940.  This one is surely not to be missed and releases on 2 October 2020.

8)Prithviraj

How can one not talk about Akshay Kumar when talking about biopics. Based on the life of king Prithviraj Chauhan, the historical period drama film is helmed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Aditya Chopra under his production house Yash Raj Films. Miss World 2017 Manushi Chillar is marking her debut with this film alongside Akshay Kumar. The film is slated for a Diwali release on 13 November 2020.

9)Saina


Another sports biopic making its way into 2020 is the Saina Nehwal biopic titled Saina. Directed by Amole Gupte and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the banner of T-Series, the sports drama features Parineeti Chopra as the badminton champion Saina Nehwal, for which the actress is undergoing vigorous training. The film also stars Manav Kaul and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles and is yet to finalize a release date. 

10)Shershaah

And last, but definitely not the least, we have Shershaah,  based on the life of Captain Vikram Batra, an officer of the Indian Army. Starring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in lead roles, the biographical film is shot in Kargil and is high on action, for which the actor underwent military training as well. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, written by Sandeep Srivastava and produced by Karan Johar under his banner of Dharma Productions, the film also stars Javed Jaffrey, Sudhanshu Pandey, Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles and is yet to finalize a release date in 2020.
