The masses would unanimously agree that 2016 was a complete package for Bollywood. The year was packed with action and emotion, where not only the big super star films topped the charts but small budget films like the content driven Pink and the romantic flick Happy Bhag Jayegi were surprising hits. Cinematically, 2016 too started off with a bang but lost its footing a few times, only to emerge as a winner towards the year-end by delivering quite a few remarkable films. Today, BollyCurry will look back upon the year and glimpse through some of those movies that sent the cash registers ringing with a collection of more than a hundred crores.

Sultan

Ali Abbas Zafar's romantic sports flick, Sultan, starring Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma emerged as the top grosser, minting over Rs. 500 crores worldwide. Sultan set a new record for the highest opening weekend collection of over Rs. 200 crores and eventually ended up being the fourth highest grossing Indian film. Once again, Sultan proves that, in Bollywood, it is the Khans who rule, and Khans who push the boundaries of stardom and box-office.

Rustom

Akshay Kumar's crime thriller, Rustom, a critically acclaimed film, hit a commercial gold with a collection of over a hundred crores. Despite facing a box office clash with Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro, Rustom emerged a clear winner and this courtroom drama became one of the highest grossing films of 2016. The movie, with its fair share of nail-biting and edge-of-the seat moments, made its mark in hearts of the viewers. It wouldn't be wrong to say that this emotional connection ultimately reflected in the box office numbers.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

Sushant Singh Rajput's sports biopic based on the life of Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, not only won him accolades but became the biggest opener of the actor's career. Buoyed by excellent reviews, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, registered the second biggest opening of the year after SultanHaving released across 3500 screens worldwide, this movie was an instant hit amongst the masses. The box office reception proved that Dhoni is indeed a role model for millions all over the world.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Karan Johar's directional flick of the year, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan, told a heart wrenching tale of unrequited love. While the critics believed that the editing scissors could have been sharper, the film grossed over 200 crores and was declared a hit. Despite its box office conflict with the Ajay Devgn starrer, Shivaay, and the numerous screening controversies that surrounded it, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil emerged a clear winner.

2016 is determined to finish off with the same bang with which it started. Given that movies like Dear Zindagi and Kahaani 2 have gotten a good critical reception, they are yet to complete the theatrical run that decides their fate. Moreover, the Aamir Khan's most awaited year-end release, Dangal, is yet to hit the silver screens and is sure to be a box office hit. Will more records be broken or will demonetization taken its toll on movies? Only time will tell.

The Bollywood industry has managed to fulfil its responsibility of churning out some amazing movies this year. ADHM???? LOOOL!!! Of course! Why am I not surprised? If this movie can be a hit, I'm sure Deshdrohi would have been a hit if it was made now.
