On April 20, 2023, Twitter removed the verified blue ticks from all accounts that do not pay a monthly fee to keep them. The blue ticks are used to verify the identity of the account holder and to distinguish them from impostors on the platform. Twitter had approximately 300,000 verified users under the original blue-check system, which included journalists, athletes, public figures, and government agencies.

Many eminent personalities in India, including Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, Rajinikanth and politicians like CM Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, as well as cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, among others, have lost their verified blue ticks from their Twitter accounts.

This move by Twitter has raised concerns that the platform could lose its status as a reliable source of accurate and up-to-date information from authentic sources, including in emergencies.

The pricing of the Blue subscriptions varies according to the market, with a cost of Rs 900 per month via iPhones and Android smartphones in India, and Rs 650 per month on the Twitter website. Users can also opt for an annual subscription that is relatively cheaper.

Well, the removal of verified blue ticks from Twitter accounts that do not pay a monthly fee has caused a significant impact on the social media platform, especially among public figures, government agencies, nonprofits, and public-service accounts around the world.

🐦 has become wacky after Jack left. Celebrities, Gvt. can afford to pay monthly subscription. Curious to know why they preferred not to pay.
