bollywood films with dysfunctional families

Family is a life jacket in the stormy sea of life.” – J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. But as we all know, no family is flawless, no home is a haven of joy, and parents are not gods. In the last two decades, Indian films have also progressed away from the Sooraj Barjatya-style depiction of families - a large house occupied with cajoling people of a joint family. In the last decade, a significant number of Indian films have successfully stirred up the topic regarding dysfunctionality in families among the commercial moviegoing audience. Here's a list of the six films that illustrates the truth behind the appealing smiles in family portraits.

Kapoor & Sons

Kapoor & Sons

This film, directed by Shakun Batra, strives to lift up a mirror to a family that is so shattered that not even the final family photograph they agree to snap at the end of the film can mend it. Each member of this household is spurred by a personal need or impulse caused by one of the family members' actions and decisions.

Sunita, played by Ratna Pathak Shah, is not exempt from the web of dysfunctionality simply because she is the mother where mothers are traditionally expected to be sacrificial and unconditionally loving. She is, in reality, the cause of Arjun and Rahul's detachment from one another. The revelation of Rahul's (Fawad Khan) sexuality, Harsh Kapoor's (Rajat Kapoor) extra marital affair and Arjun's love story adds to the drama.

Kapoor & Sons offers a striking message about acceptance without romanticising it or becoming overwhelmed by dysfunctionality, which distinguishes it from every other family drama film.

Baghban

Baghban

This BR Chopra film provides all the ammunition your parents will ever need to spew bizarre statements about love, mistreatment, selfishness, or abandoning them when they get old. With this overblown depiction of family abuse, you'd frequently find yourself on an emotional roller-coaster.

Children who have selfish intentions to keep their parents with them, teenagers who wish to support their grandparents but do so on conditions is what Baghban is about. Even though millennials have loathed this film every time they have had to watch it, it does reflect how some families function in reality.

Piku

Piku

Piku delves into the evolving dynamics of parent-child responsibilities between the leads, performed by Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone. Piku is agitated when caring for her finicky father, but she sympathises with him.

Piku with its quirky side was a breath of fresh air for Bollywood, and Piku's (Deepika Padukone) dynamic with her overbearing father made for a conventional and relatable plot. We all love our parents, even when their antics get on our buttons, and this film effectively depicts a real father-daughter bond.

Do Dooni Chaar

Do Dooni Chaar

The plot revolves around a middle-class schoolteacher (Rishi Kapoor) who attempts to keep his wife and children happy while saving for a car. The middle-class schoolteacher who works extra hours to supplement his income and send his children to decent school finds himself in a moral quandary when it comes to meeting the wants of his always dissatisfied teenage children. Highlighting the everyday problems of a middle-class family, this film subtly ventures into dysfunctionality while striking a balance with reality and family drama.

Dil Dhadkne Do

Dil Dhadkne Do

Another masterwork that does not hold back in presenting the complexities of a typical Indian family beset by concerns like  misogyny, favouritism, and infidelity. This film, directed by Zoya Akhtar, revolves around a family of four – mother, father, son, and daughter and devotes itself totally to the discovery of the dysfunctionality of the highly wealthy Mehra family. Because the father, Kamal Mehra, played by Anil Kapoor, is the household patriarch who seeks to reign over their family, the children's attitudes are detached in front of their parents. The film is a mixed bag of emotions, drama and pinching family issues every common person can resonate to.

A film that takes us through the lives of two families, demonstrating how broken, flawed, and occasionally infuriating our own family members can be. Arjun Kapoor's relationship with his dad, Amrita Singh's bond with her husband were not only the part of the plot, but a mirror to many Indian households who lives in the bubble of a happy oriented family.

2 States demonstrated all that is frequently wrong with our societal conditioning and thinking, as well as how even the most shattered relationships can be repaired with hard work.
