The world came to a standstill when the deadly coronavirus hit it in late 2019. As soon as the WHO announced the outbreak as a pandemic, our country braced for the first phase of a 21-day nationwide lockdown. But while, the lucky ones, got to stay in the luxury of their houses, there was a huge part of the country, on the road, fighting for survival, not just from the coronavirus, but from hunger, thirst, no transport, and mostly from the lack of support.

Call it unfair or injustice, the plight of migrant laborers is something that you cannot look away from. And “Balika Vadhu” star Shashank Vyas has voiced his opinion on the matter with a beautiful poem.

Shashank shared the poem on his Instagram page and titled it “Bas chal raha hai.” The video features images of the migrant labourers with a voiceover by the actor.

The poem starts with, “Dhoop tez hai lekin chal raha hai, dekhe the kuch sapne, vishwas bhi tha mann mein, lekin ab bina kisi ummeed ke chal raha hai. Himmat tut rahi hai, saansein phul rahi hai, lekin phir bhi bina kisi sahare chal raha hai...”

Talking about his emotion behind the poem, the actor said, “I felt for them. In my ac room having all the luxuries around, I was thinking  in the same house, in one room, one has all the luxuries, but in the another room, one has nothing, not even good or water. Looking at the labourers like that I was in pain. India is our home, we all are part of a big family and we just left that one big sector on road to walk.”

“I am questioning humanity. I saw pictures of a son carrying his mom, pregnant women, kids...

How can we all just sit at home do nothing about it. I was feeling so helpless that I penned down my feelings. The basic question is ‘Why they are on roads?’, and even after coming on roads why no transportation has been provided to them. What will those kids learn from this? Lack of humanity. I feel those labourers should be taken under confidence by stating them they don't need to panic, secondly, basic groceries should be provided to them by making different teams added by social workers and volunteers,” he added.
