Babil Khan recalls father Irrfan Khan's final days before death; says “He just looked at me, smiled and said…”

Actor Irrfan Khan’s sad demise on April 29, 2020, was a shocker to the entire nation and as India lost a gem of an actor, his battle with a neuroendocrine tumour came to an end. While April 29 marks the death anniversary of one of the finest actors of Bollywood his son Babil Khan opened up about his father's final days in the hospital.

Babil, in an interview with Film Companion, recalled his time with his father two-three days before he died. The aspiring actor shared, 

I was there in the hospital, two-three days before he died. He was losing consciousness and one of the last things he said...he just looked at me, smiled and said 'I am going to die' and I told him 'No you are not'. He then smiled again and went back to sleep.

Irrfan was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai, a few days before he died on April 29 last year.

Along with Babil, Irrfan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar was also present during the recent interview and recalled her husband’s finest qualities. She pointed out that one of Irrfan's best qualities was that he did not lie.

"I feel the most precious quality about him, was that he never pretended. If he is angry with you, or he is in love with you. Main thing is, when he is in love with you and says 'I love you', he did not pretend. He did not say it, till he meant it," she shared.

Meanwhile, the 93rd Academy Awards on Monday, paid tribute to Indian actor Irrfan Khan in its In Memorium segment during the Oscar awards ceremony held on Monday.

The late actor Irrfan Khan, appeared in Oscar-winning films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Life of Pi, and was honoured at the 93rd Academy Awards. He has also worked in Hollywood films including, Jurassic World, Inferno, The Amazing Spider-Man and others. 

Earlier this month, apart from that Oscars, the 74th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) also paid tribute to Irrfan Khan in their ‘In Memorium’ segment.

In a career span of 32-years, Irrfan Khan made a quintessential debut in Bollywood with a feature film - Salaam Bombay! It was an unusual and one of a kind attempt that decided his fate for years to come and laid the foundation of an actor who would lead to being one of the critically acclaimed actors of all time.

Irrfan Khan passed away on April 29, 2020, after a two-year-long battle with cancer. He even shot for his last film ‘Angrezi Medium’ which released just before the lockdown was imposed in the country.
