Lately, there have been multiple instances of how several actors come forward to express their disdain. About what? About the fact that some casting directors and others taking auditions for multiple projects go on to take the respective actor's social media following into account for roping in actors for those projects.
Only recently, actor Rohan Gandotra mentioned how he list on a few projects because of 'less social media' following and presence. On that note, several other actors have also expressed their disappointment with the same.
But that has been one side. Actor Avneet Kaur, who has been in multiple shows over the years is also one of the most popular social media influencers and enjoys over 22 million followers on Instagram.
Giving her take on the saga to ETimes TV, she said, “I don’t think that is true. Mainstream casting directors will never look at your followers on Instagram. Instead, they will see your acting skills and accordingly make their decision. I have never experienced anything like this, which is why I have a different opinion. All good directors will want an actor that does justice to the character so that it strikes a chord with viewers.”

If the show is ott platform like Web or albums then definitely online popularity matters so they cast according to online popularity but if it's tv show then only trps matters not online popularity so their proper character fitting is given importance

Probably depends on whose the target audience. If its for an online show or a show for youth sure but not for most trp shows.

Only they know the truth. Some actors mentioned that the casting director clearly told them that despite their talent, they would not get the role because they were not popular enough on social media. It probably depends from casting director to casting director or on what is the policy of that production house. The point is that a huge following base doesn't automatically mean that those people will also watch the movie/show.
