All's Well That Ends Well Or Is It?

"Hamari zindagi mein bhi end tak sab kuch thik hi ho jaata hai. Happies ending...Aur agar thik naa ho toh woh the end nahi picture abhi baki hai mere dost." - Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om.

Feeling optimistic yet? Storywriters and directors have taken this one dialogue to heart so much, that no matter what the story is, a happy ending is a must. In fact, so much so that sometimes they will show miracles beyond miracles! Today, BollyCurry brings to you some movies that have followed this concept of "happy ending" at the cost of the story.

The first movie on our list is Alone (2015). While it's true that probably the entire movie didn't make sense, the ending absolutely made no sense. Up until discovering Sanjana's (Bipasha Basu) body, Kabir (Karan Singh Grover) had thought that his wife was Sanjana and his love knew no bounds. However, the moment he found out that she was Anjana (Bipasha Basu in a double role), all love went out the window. Why? If you've loved Anjana all this time, then why not just tell Sanjana's aatma that you love Anjana, do Sanjana's last rites, and live happily ever after? Why must Anjana die to prove that Kabir is a diehard lover of Sanjana? This one goes beyond us!

Dolly Ki Doli (2015) showcased the story of a looteri dulhan. Now, the storyline itself had a lot of loopholes, but skipping over those, let's just look specifically at the final thirty minutes or so. Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) has her face plastered over national television and everyone supposedly knows that she is the looteri dulhan, yet she and her fake family still takes the risk of conning a NRI prince (Saif Ali Khan). Fine. Accepted. But then, Robin Pandey (Pulkit Samrat) catches her, and after some over-the-top scenes, they end up married happily with Dolly having supposedly run away again. But we're not done yet! Dolly runs away in real, the day after her marriage and goes on to continue conning people! How can that be if everyone has seen her face? Is South India not part of India?

If you met someone who spoke German and was the most beautiful/handsome person on Earth would you marry them, especially if you don't understand German? Probably not. But in Singh is Bling (2015), this is exactly what Raftaar Singh (Akshay Kumar) doesn't do. Leaving the plot and the story aside, one thing that was consistent throughout the movie was that Sara (Amy Jackson) does not understand or speak Hindi. Yet, as is true for all movies with a happy ending, Raftaar and Sara end up together. Needless to say, this love will continue to need Emily (Lara Dutta) for translation or one of them will have to learn the other's language.

One thing that Bollywood is famous for, apart from the song and dance, is remakes. One such remake is Bang Bang (2014), whose story was adopted from Knight and Day (a 2010 Hollywood movie). What irks us is how did Harleen (Katrina Kaif) get to Rajveer (Hrithik Roshan) in the hospital after the fight and manage to get him out unseen? Did they borrow the Invisibility cloak from Harry Potter? This is one ending that surely didn't make sense.

Next on our list is the coming-of-age movie Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013). Now the movie is about how four characters grow and mature in life. One of these characters is Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor), who pursues his dream of journalism and traveling, after his university education. Fast forward eight years and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) is getting married, which leads to everyone coming down for a reunion of sorts. Old flames reignite and Naina (Deepika Padukone) and Bunny fall in love. Yet, neither of them is willing to give up their career to follow the other. This is refreshing because today's generation prefers to focus on their career before settling down in life. But in typical Bollywood fashion, Bunny decides to turn down his dream job to be with Naina. While we understand that these decisions are realistic, what we don't understand is why it had to be a happy ending in this era? Why couldn't they show Bunny pursuing his dream job and maybe 5 years down the line, the two deciding that they wanted to settle down with each other or maybe separate people?

Finally, we bring to you a recently released movie Happy Bhaag Jayegi (2016). In this light-hearted and sweet flick, Happy (Diana Penty), the female protagonist, meets three men in her journey: Bagga (Jimmy Shergill), Happy's suitor; Bilal (Abhay Deol), an upcoming politician in Pakistan; and Guddu (Ali Fazal), Happy's lover. Now throughout the movie, we see Happy and Bilal together and it appears that both are getting close. Then why does Happy finally end up with Guddu? In fact, why does Happy end up with anyone? She loves her independence, so why couldn't her father accept that?

Before BollyCurry stops believing in happy endings or logical endings, we've decided to stop here. However, we're sure that if we were to continue going back into the 2000s and even earlier, we could have come up with a rather long list. There's hope that directors and storywriters move into a new realm where sometimes, all isn't well at the end. After all, there is much more to every story than happy endings.

I guess in YJHD, it isn't Bunny who leaves his dream job but it actually looked like he wanted Naina to leave her dream job because all she wanted to do was settle and run her clinic but in the end he wanted her to accompany him in his travels... Hmm... :/

About Happy Bhaag Jaayegi, Happy wanted to be with Guddu, she wanted to marry him, not Bagga, so she ran away. It's not that she didn't to get married at all. I think the dialogue, "Kya hoga jyaada se jyaada, jo chaha nahi milega na? par atleast dil ko tassali milegi ki jamake try maara," and Guddu-happy's plan to elope had explain this!

writers are very optimist to do happy ending in Indian culture otherwise compare to Hollywood they don't care about happy ending sometimes hero or heroin were dead. anyway good article on such topic. best wishes from smsduniya

In YJHD he really didn't leave his job he did mentioned that he wanted to travel in two tkts that means he wanted to be with her even with his job. Coming to HBJG happy was in love with Guudu from first she ran away with him on her wedding day but accidentally hit with Bilal when she is already in love with Guddu how can she be with Bilal? Just because U became cozy with someone it's not necessary that U should end up together just because she is independent that doesn't mean that she should be single Guddu was the one who accepted her by the way she is & gave her the freedom she needed so it's fine

This is so right. Amazing work Bolly Curry Writers.
Some have so much of un realistic endings and no matter what all the story writers want in end - real or not.

But I am still very uncanny about you guys for picking up YJHD because supposedly Bunny & Naina met after 8 years with Naina as doc which is moving on from past but Bunny never left his dream - sometimes something happens accordingly, when they have to and sometimes you have a choice from which one can keep you happy forever and some just might makr you remorse for not choosing the right thing.

Anyways, great topic and amazing write up.

PS : Love Ranbir Kapoor & Karan Singh Grover

Agree with everything except YJHD. Bunny never left his dream job. On new year's evening, he comes with a ring and tells Naina that he wants to travel with HER now. Naina will go abroad with him and Bunny will continue his dream job. What's wrong in 'happy endings' if they make sense?

Agree with everything! Somewhere these not - so - happening - happy endings have to stop. But blame the typical audience for it : they don't appreciate and accept movies without happy endings.
...

Barring Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewaani (seriously Bunny didn't leave His dream), everything was point on!
There could've been a different take on this : Naina shouldn't have married such a selfish person who didn't come on his father's death nor payed heed to his friends, created false hopes for Adi. She should've settled with someone else, for whom family mattered, still being friends with him.
...

Nonetheless loved it!
PS : I'm glad BC is picking up such topics :)

Sometimes to get something we have to lose something... That is what they showed in YJHD... Bunny let go his opportunity because he wanted to be with naina... He want his dream job but not in the cost of naina... He want both... Its quite related with reality... So yuh the happy ending was much needed for this film...
