Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to not appear before the ED today as her adjournment plea is accepted

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Aishwarya Rai Bachchan today for questioning in connection with the 2016 Panama Papers tax leaks case. 

The actress, however, will not appear before the investigating agency. Aishwarya requested an adjournment, which was granted. Aishwarya had previously requested an adjournment on two occasions. The actress will have to testify before the ED's Delhi office as part of the investigation. 

The Enforcement Directorate has been looking into this case since 2016, when several leaked documents came to light. Amitabh Bachchan's name had previously surfaced in the Panama Papers controversy. According to ANI, the Bachchan family has been served notices asking them to explain their foreign remittances since 2004 under the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Liberalized Remittance Scheme (LRS). 

This controversy is called 'Panama Papers' because it came to light after an investigation of a stockpile of records from Panamanian legal firm Mossack Fonseca by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists named several world leaders and celebrities who had allegedly stashed away money abroad in offshore companies.

Talking about work, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan recently completed filming on Mani Ratnam's magnum opus 'Ponniyin Selvan.' She will reportedly play two roles in this epic drama based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's historical fiction novel of the same name.
