  1. First of all, tell us something about your character and what’s the one thing which you love about Nasir?

My character’s name in the film is Nasir Jamal. He is dynamic, high on confidence and a good sort of dramatic character. I think what I love about him is that he is so different from how I am, whether it’s his manner of speech, how he is carrying himself or his reaction to situations. He is completely polar opposite to who I am so that is what sort of attracted me to portray him on screen because it would of course be a lot of work but it would be an aspiration of something that I never explored before.

  1. What compelled you to take up this project?

Like I said, for me it was the wonderful script that Ranjan Bhai had written, it was this fabulous character that I would get to play and it was the people that I would get the opportunity to work with.

  1. We know that you have co-written Panipat and you have also assisted in ‘OMG: Oh My God!’. So how was that experience and what difference you felt in this project where now you are seen as the main lead?

I mean both in their own way was incredibly enjoyable, wonderful learning experiences, they are completely different from one another because it’s three different jobs. They are all on a film set and at one point you’re an actor, so you are thinking about something different, your preparation is different, your job is different and how you sort of wind down after is different.

With regards to panipat, a lot of our work was done was much in advance and of course there were certain changes here and there until the film goes to floors but for the most part, it's done in the past with research and then readings with Aushutosh sir and our co-writers. So that is a completely different process and as far as assisting directing goes, you know I was learning the ropes and Umesh Shukla sir is a fabulous director and a wonderful person with a great sense of comedy and story, so that was a lovely way to sort of set myself up for the coming years.

So yes, they were very very different from each other and I enjoyed each one of them for what they were.

  1. After writing and being an assistant director, with Bamfaad you’re making your big debut in acting. So what took it so long?

I was studying theatre in London and then I did my masters in Fine Arts and dramatic writing at NYU. After which I was in New York, where I worked as a writer, as an actor on the stage. Then I moved back when I started getting wonderful work over here and then it happened soon after I moved back so I feel very fortunate in that sense.

How was the experience working with your co-stars Shalini and everyone?

Fabulous, We are all in a way in the beginning of our journey. But of course a lot of them are far more experienced than I am. But never at any point I felt intimidated. They are all so talented, Shalini is spontaneous, she is really an amazing actress. Vijay Varma and Jatin Sarna are powerhouse of talent. It was an amazing learning experience and I am fortunate to be able to work with them in my first film. Because working with great actors makes your own performance better.

Was there any kind of pressure being the son of such a veteran actor?

No, you know I am sure there was some at the back of my mind but to be honest, my father has achieved so much and he’s so far ahead, almost a legend in his own right so there is no fear of me being compared to him.

Lastly, do you have any message for your fans and how are you spending your quarantine time?

I am staying indoors and doing my best to help in whatever I can, whether it is financially, for food or for stray animals. It's a sad situation, the least you can do is sort of follow the brief, stay indoors and if you have the means to help somebody then extend your hand and do that.
